Validation Workshop: Education in Emergencies Teacher Education curriculum

The Department of Education Administration and Planning organized a 1 day validation workshop for a proposed certificate course in Education in Emergencies.  The workshop was convened by Dr. Loise Gichuhi; a Senior lecturer in the Department and an Education in Emergencies expert.

The workshop was officially opened by the College Principal; Prof. Isaac Jumba who urged all participants to give their expert recommendations to ensure that the course is broad and demand-driven.

Participants were drawn from various sectors including Save the Children, National Council for Normadic Education in Kenya (NACONEK), Education in Emergencies Association, Ministry of Education, Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC), Teacher Service Commission, PhD and Masters students from the University of Nairobi and Faculty members from the College of Education and External studies.

To set the stage for discussions, Ms. Juliet Kyoshabire; Regional Educational Advisor, Save the Children gave a presentation on the “East and Southern Africa Region Overview of Education in Emergencies.  Her presentation touched on Education policies in various countries, teaching and learning and various interventions to support teachers and learners in crisis settings. Ms. Hellen Avisi from the Ministry of Education presented the various interventions that the Ministry is implementing at a national level.

Participants worked in groups to deliberate on the proposed Course units that will cover Professional Units, Teaching subjects and Practicum. Participants presented their recommendations to validate and enrich the course.  

The workshop was facilitated by Dr. Loise Gichuhi, Dr. Daniel Gakunga, Dr. Rosemary Imonje and Dr. Lucy Njagi
